I am, for lack of a better word, extremely anal when it comes to my movies. My collection is catalogued in three different places online. I contribute changes for a new disc on a regular basis-even changing an "a" to "an". I have my library on my shelves in a certain way: television shows, Disney movies, snap cases, two disc sets, multi disc special packaging sets, series or franchise films and then regular one disc movies. Heaven help the person who grabs something off the shelf without telling me. I know something is gone instantly and, given just a couple of minutes, I can pin down exactly what is gone.
And if you´re lucky enough to get me to lend you something, you´d better be sure that whatever it is makes it back into my hands in exactly the same condition it left. I don´t take discs in special packaging or digipacks outside the house: those things get damaged entirely too easy. I even go as far as to upgrade the few snap cases I have left to keep cases when I can find them on the shelf. My Platinum Series edition of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is going out the door the minute the new two disc set hits my hot little hands.
If you´ll also recall, I keep a list of movies to get and their release dates. Perfectly logical and rational, as far as I´m concerned. However, I´ve recently enhanced that list. It´s no longer a couple pieces of paper; instead, I have a movie book.
Okay, stop laughing.
Fine. Laugh if you want. I can wait.
Done yet?
Good.
My movie book has three different tabs in it: To Buy, Prices and To See. Those tabs have information on the movies that, well, fall into those categories.
Under "To Buy," every new release Tuesday has a separate page. Even if nothing is scheduled for a certain week (which, honestly, doesn´t happen until October 17, then again on October 31 and then the end of December. We´ll get to what´s on this list later on.
Every week, I print out the prices at each of the major retailers and then the prices for the things I´m interested in from a handful of online stores. I highlight what I´m going to get and where. A lot of factors go into figuring out exactly where the purchase is going to be. Price is certainly a major consideration, but if the set includes any exclusive bonus material, special lenticular covers, lithographs or whatever else a retailer can come up with all affect my decision.
Finally, the third tab ("To See") includes movies I want to see but just haven´t gotten around to it yet. Most of them are suggestions from the three or four DVD/movie podcasts I listen to on a weekly basis. This list actually started out as little more than chicken scratch when I was driving in the car (since that´s where I listen to the most ´casts). This list doesn´t include the 60 or so titles already in my Netflix queue nor does it include every single movie I haven´t seen. But, in no particular order, some of the films here are "Cole Miner´s Daughter", "The Upside of Anger", "Ordinary People", "Singing in the Rain", "Cabaret", "The Right Stuff" and "An Affair to Remember". Lots of different genres, lots of different time periods.
So you might think: "Okay, if this guys has two different lists of movies he hasn´t seen yet, what exactly does he watch?" Fair enough. I´d like to say, in my defense, that I viewed a grand total of 15 movies in August. This month is a bit slower because I´m trying to work through some TV sets I´ve left on the shelf entirely too long. But, as an round-about estimate, I would guess I´ve seen well over 100 flicks this year alone, between the theater and DVD´s. Some of these movies are things you´ve never heard of (I watched the godawful "The Beast in the Cellar" on Tuesday night) and some are things I wish I´d never have taken the time to watch ("The Corpse Bride", for one).
I guess it´s time for the main event, isn´t it? You guys want to pick apart my "To Buy" list again, don´t you? Alright, I give in. I´ll let you guys in on it.
